Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. While DuVernay lived in Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a young student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
